About Owings, MD

Small brick post office and white country church at a crossroads in Owings, Maryland

Owings is an unincorporated community and census designated place in northern Calvert County, right next to Friendship. Chesapeake Beach is about 4 miles away, and Annapolis is about 23 miles away. Most addresses use ZIP code 20736, and the mailing area reaches from Route 4 east toward the bay towns and west to the Patuxent River at Lower Marlboro.

Before the Civil War, Owings was tobacco country, much like the rest of southern Maryland. The community is named for the Owings family, who settled here in the 18th century, and Harry P. Owings lived in the Owings house on Solomons Road. The family helped turn the North Beach and Chesapeake Beach areas into a summer resort and helped plan the Chesapeake Beach Railway. The Owings stop was the only one in Calvert County at the time, and old tobacco barns can still be seen along local roads.

About half of Owings is covered in trees, and local rules preserve these natural areas. The Owings Town Center is a small local hub with the post office, a church, and neighborhood businesses. Many residents commute north on Route 4 toward Joint Base Andrews and Washington, D.C., or toward Annapolis.

Owings Real Estate

Owings is known for larger lots and a country feel within commuting range of the city. Here is a general picture of what buyers usually find.

Subdivisions off Route 260, Route 4, and Chaneyville Road offer colonials, split levels, and ranchers on wooded lots, many on an acre or more.

Rural properties include horse farms, small farms, and homes on several acres. Most homes outside the town center use a private well and septic system, so plan for inspections of both.

Some newer communities have a homeowners association, while many older streets and rural lots do not. Read the documents and confirm any fees before you write an offer.

Calvert County has no incorporated town in the Owings area, so homes pay county and state property taxes only.

Prices change with the season and supply, and they vary from one area to the next. Instead of relying on old averages, ask us for recent sales close to the homes you like.
